Improving lives through technology, with a bias toward major advances, uncommon risk-reward, choosing to invest where traditional venture funds may pass either for check-box or for theme-du-jour reasons, or for failing to appropriately value potential scale or dimensions that have been de-risked. Our emphasis is on the magnitude, importance and likelihood of a deliverable improvement, a solution's uniqueness, defensible IP, and a large pending inflection.
We aspire to advise portfolio companies of funds we advise in their strategy at each step. This may include helping with further capital needs, optimizing business strategy, refining their pitch, and advising on negotiations or contract terms. This is enabled by acting as a sounding board, and to conduct brainstorming sessions, with no time constraint or formalities. Most important in this is the ability to play 20 questions unusually well, while respecting the entrepreneur's vision and expertise, enabling them to arrive at the best answers, while inspiring them with a penchant for optimization on every front, sharing the founder's passion, and often evangelizing a vision larger than first envisioned.
Our CIO brings 20 years of investment experience as an early-stage investor and as a generalist. The advantage of a generalist is a focus on--and an eye for--risk-reward, de-risking and consulting with experts, rather than presuming expertise in a world where specialization is increasingly compartmentalized so that some sector experts may assume too much in examining a subspecialty, or they may be limited in selection to where they sit.
